A Teddy Bear Brooch Bouquet for a Very Personal 30th Anniversary

Every custom bouquet starts with a brief, but some briefs are more unusual than others.

For this bouquet, I was asked to create something to celebrate a couple’s 30th anniversary — and the starting point was wonderfully personal:

teddy bears...

The couple are huge teddy bear fans, so rather than simply using their chosen colours (royal blue and orange), I wanted the finished bouquet to tell part of their story too.

Turning a personal story into a bouquet

I’ve been creating brooch bouquets and alternative bridal accessories for more than 15 years, and one of my favourite parts of making bespoke pieces is finding ways to incorporate details that mean something to the person receiving them.

For this bouquet, teddy bears became the central feature.

I combined them with a selection of individually hand-wired brooches, crystals and decorative elements in rich royal blue, orange and warm metallic tones.

Each element was positioned individually as the bouquet was built, rather than being glued onto a pre-made foam ball. That allows me to control the shape and balance of the bouquet while incorporating unusual and personal pieces.

A tiny detail inspired by their honeymoon

One detail in particular had a lovely story behind it.

Thirty years ago, during their honeymoon, the couple took a red-coloured helicopter flight into the Grand Canyon.

So, of course, I had to find a little red helicopter to include in the bouquet.

It’s a tiny element within a much larger piece, but those are often the details that make a bespoke bouquet feel truly personal.

Someone else looking at the bouquet might simply see a quirky charm. To the couple receiving it, it represents a very specific memory from the beginning of their marriage.

Royal blue, orange — and lots of teddy bears

The colour combination was another part of the challenge.

Royal blue and orange are both strong colours, so I wanted to use them in a way that felt joyful without overwhelming the bears and brooch details.

Small ribbons, coloured stones and selected brooches bring the palette through the bouquet, while the cream teddy bears give the design a softer base.

The result is deliberately unconventional — which was exactly the point.

A bouquet that doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s

One of the nicest things about creating a bespoke brooch bouquet is that there really isn’t a set formula.

A bouquet can be inspired by wedding colours, vintage jewellery, family pieces, hobbies, memories, places or — in this case — teddy bears and a honeymoon helicopter flight.

I keep a constantly changing collection of new and vintage-style brooches and select pieces to suit each commission. Personal items can also sometimes be incorporated where appropriate.

That means two bouquets will never be exactly the same.

More than a wedding-day accessory

Although brooch bouquets are often commissioned for weddings, they can also be created to mark anniversaries, elopements and other special occasions.

Unlike fresh flowers, a keepsake bouquet can be displayed and kept afterwards — and when it includes details connected to a couple’s history, it becomes much more than a decorative object.

This teddy bear bouquet is probably one of the most unusual commissions I’ve created, but it’s also a perfect example of why I enjoy bespoke work so much.

A brief that began with:

“teddy bears, royal blue and orange”

became a bouquet containing 30 years of memories.
